No the sets give each one a different boost, one focuses on Speed, another on Attack, etc. Then there's the "ultimate set" which would boost a lot of stats.
A solution could be the one you mentioned indeed, that armor/items and appearance would be different things. I'll need to think about it more

Please let us choose the appearance for the girls without having to fuss over stats. I'd rather play dress up than stat up.

Hmm need to think about it. I mean, for me would be super easy to not assign any stats but would be weird. I guess I could have a separate tab for "real inventory" and "appearance" or something. Need to do some tests

In Splatoon, the stat bonuses you get from items have very little to do with what piece of equipment you have. The only real difference is rarity but there's even ways of getting around that. I know in the original Guild Wars (Nightfall onwards) you buy armour with no stat bonuses and then assign stat bonuses to them by buying separate items that are applied to that piece of armour.
Long story short, stat bonuses and appearance being separated seems increasingly popular.

Yes I thought about allowing the player to assign stats to clothing separately in a sort of crafting minigame. It might be possible, I'll spend the next days trying to code this feature and see if I make it. This way everyone can "craft" what they want *
* of course, with some limits related to stats not being overpowered

Yeah, otherwise we'd all just wear the ultimate set once unlocked, regardless of whether or not we thought it looked good.
(Plus, it'd make balancing a lot easier!)

Actually I hope on easier difficulties you could get away with not wearing the best set.
Anyway just to add another nuance of a system, WoW's transmogrification works like this if we simplify it a little: Any item you own can be made to look like any other item (of the same slot) you own.
Another thing you could do is let clothes be purely cosmetic and have stats come from jewelry, but it would feel weird for Kira to tank with her necklace rather than a full suit of armor.

I'm personally hoping you can play normal on underwear mode and ignore equipment entirely, but we'll have to wait for the demo to see.

I'm going to use some system like the Torchlight/Diablo sockets: all items have no stats (so that's different from the two titles mentioned) but you can put gems/whatever in sockets to gain stats. Like 1 Ruby = 1 Attack / 1 Fire resistance and so on. This way I need only to have a good variety of gems to try some interesting combos and done

I still need to code it of course, but I THINK should be able to make it!

Hmm that would be called the "hardcore naked" mode

in the catacombs, mad priests will ask you to answer impossible riddles like this one! WHAT IS THE RIGHT ANSWER WOAH!
If you fail, a group of zombies and skeleton will come and have a friendly talk with you about the topic

(I'm sure nightmare players will fail the answer on purpose to fight the new enemies!).
This whole level (second level of catacombs) will have this mad priest asking riddles until the end. I'm having fun coding/writing this
