Nicole beta testing thread!

Post by jack1974 »

So finally the beta can begin!! Grab the game here:
http://www.macgames.biz/games/Nicole-0.8.9-all.zip (single .zip containing executables for all supported platforms)
If you haven't bought it yet and want to:
http://www.winterwolves.com/nicole.htm

Walkthrough/Tips:
Spoiler:
- each boy has an associated stat. Darren: Amity, Ted: Diligence, Jeff:Wit and Kurt:Zeal. Reach >900 value with it + 99% relationship with the boy to unlock romance scene. Reach also 999 clues to unlock special ending scene
- don't rush into increasing the stats. the Morale/Energy value has a big impact. Sometimes is better to rest one full day and the next day you'll get more increase
- as the stat increase, you'll become more skilled and get even more increase. so if in the beginning the stat increase amount seems small, don't worry, later will be better
- the gifts are NEEDED to increase the relationship value enough and get the romance endings. So don't think to get away without making any gifts to those poor boys!
What's new in 0.8.9
- the "ending unlocked" texts appears only once, the first time (before they were appearing every time you replayed the endings from the gallery screen)
- various typos and some wrong background images, but that's it :)

What's new in 0.8.8
- added 4 extra book in online shopping, each one will increase one stat by 100! with that nobody should have any problem to reach the required stat value for each boy :)
- in Easy mode only, you make more money with the Jobs
- the online shopping has a custom chibi icon now :)
- added an extra check so the errors if you end an activity when is night time shouldn't appear anymore
- more typos fixed

What's new in 0.8.7
- after the lost phone scene, Nicole doesn't go out since is scared
- the references to specific date/months in the mystery plot have been changed so they work no matter when they play. So "last month" becomes "last August" or "a few months ago" and so on (if you find more, let me know).

What's new in 0.8.6
- CG images now will appear  (sorry about that! it was just a way to test if the gallery screen works, I swear! go there to replay the scenes you have already unlocked)
- location background image will reflect the time of the day more accurately
- fixed a bug that was causing the game to be stuck with no action available if you ended a mystery scene exactly at night time (would show the screen "Choose what to do" but no options!)
- fixed the bug that would let you buy things in the online shopping without enough money!
- fixed Chandra mouth alignment
- the relationship point for Voix aren't shown in the daily summary so you don't know who he is until you find out in the game. The choices scores are still taken into account of course
- the scenes between Jeff and Ted at the pharmacy and store now appears in the right sequence and the small text inconsistencies have been fixed!
- various typos

SINCE THIS GAME HAS A MYSTERY ELEMENT, PLEASE REMEMBER TO USE THE SPOILER TAG!

A few notes:
I tested the game myself and was able to get all the endings. I'm looking for any bug report, from typos (even if the writer is going to recheck everything as well this week), to plot inconsistency, or for example if the text says "it's night" but in reality you see a bright day image, and so on. PLEASE BE ACCURATE when describing the bug (the exact phrase displayed) since the game is big and also after some scenes non-linear, so is hard for me to find it otherwise :)

There are some very small discrepancies in some ending CGs (they were drawn before some clothes... so the clothes of the CG couldn't match 100% the one the characters are wearing, but hopefully that's not a big issue ).

About difficulty: I think in Hard settings, once you know some tricks, the game can be win. However let me know if you find the game too easy (or too hard, but I don't think, is just a matter of knowing what to do).

When is the deadline for the end of beta?

(I'm off to test now but I'm not able to do it all day. :( )

No deadline really, I wanted to get the game out for Halloween but if it's not out, no problems :)

Cool. Also, it's probably my laptop, but my Mystery Progress bar is shot.

Did you press shift+G to go in DirectX mode and update the drivers?

To help participate in the beta, do we need to purchase the game first? (i.e. register it)

Well yes, though the demo lasts a while (30 days in-game) so I think if you don't find any bugs in the demo, it should be fine (the only extra things are the jobs and online shopping).

Not a problem then :D And at least when you update it, the activation will still work just fine (like it did with Love and Order).

I got the demo, and one thing I noticed is:

Where the bottom bar changes color and gives the instructions for the tutorial, I have to switch to the mouse. (I can move through most text using the enter-key, but not through these.)
