Announcing “Love Bites”

I’m very proud to announce that I brought together two awesome people: Rebecca (the artist behind my early titles like Heileen and Bionic Heart) and Miakoda (PSCD writer) to make a new game! ๐Ÿ™‚

I am quite excited about it. I don’t want to reveal too much about the story, since involves supernatural. Also, the full game title (or the subtitle if you prefer) is longer… but if I posted it now, I would give away some of the surprise. So for now I’ll just call it “Love Bites” ๐Ÿ˜‰

Some more information: it’s going to have a classic dating sim gameplay, with a calendar, several places/activities to do, and of course love interests. It’s going to have both male and female protagonists, and have both straight and homosexual romances. There will be 2 male and 2 female love interests and you’ll be able to romance all of them with the male or female main character.

Are you already excited? I am! In the next weeks I’ll introduce the cast of the game. For now, here is a preview of the two main protagonists:

Yes two red-heads ๐Ÿ˜‰ The cute dog Kaitlyn is carrying is Nick (even Brandon can carry him of course). It’s based on one of the pet I used to have (unfortunately he died back in 2011):

Nick

I already put several of my cats in games (Black of Heileen, Othello in Bionic Heart, Nina in Always Remember Me, Remi in PSCD) but this is the first dog!

Other news

This week also got a good news for yaoi-lovers: the writing of my first yaoi-only dating sim Heirs & Graces is finished! It still needs to be all scripted, coded, it’s missing some music, etc so it won’t be out shortly, but very likely will be the next game to be out after C14 Dating.

I also finished the last part of the Queen Of Thieves “robbery missions” and asked artist to do some tweaks to the sprites. I need to review all the scenes now, integrate them in the game (so if you visit the blacksmith with the right characters, you’ll meet Mary-Ann, etc) and make note of some missing backgrounds. Still a lot of work to do but having finished the coding is a big milestone.

I also got to play a first beta candidate of C14 Dating and it’s looking AWESOME. I am really eager to start the preorders which might happen very soon, even this weekend, so follow me on social media or read the forums to know more ๐Ÿ™‚

Currently I’m looking at this release schedule (which of course could totally change based on cosmic-events, as you well know):
– end of this month/next month: C14 Dating beta
– April/May: Heirs & Graces beta
– June/July: Queen Of Thieves beta

will be fun in a few months to go back to this post, and see what REALLY happened ๐Ÿ˜‰

Future card games and update

Future card games

dancing

So about 10 days passed since I released my card game PSCD. It was my first card game, and as you can imagine I was unsure about the results. If I compare it to my latest game, the RPG Seasons Of The Wolf, I can see that PSCD revenues are about 3 times less.

But it’s NOT bad as it sounds! First of all, SOTW was based on an existing world, so many players who liked Loren could potentially like that one as well (especially since I now I am implementing a “VN Mode” for it as well!) and was a RPG. It was also $25 vs $20.

Regarding PSCD, since it has also a story, and many of my players buy the games for the story, I won’t have any real data until the game is on Steam where a bigger audience will judge it (even those who aren’t much into stories but like more the gameplay). It will probably be around March.

Anyway I was saying that even if the sales ratio remains the same, I need to take into account a very important thing: time/money spent. As for money I spent a bit more on PSCD than SOTW (but not by much) but regarding time…! I spent 10 months coding SOTW back in 2014, while I spent 3 months (and not even all of them full time since I was following other projects) doing PSCD.

So this means that even if PSCD keeps selling at 1/3 of SOTW, it will still be a better ROI for me ๐Ÿ™‚ Yes because as you can imagine is better for me to work 3 months on something, than 10 months.

This means that I will probably be doing more card games, besides the already planned Undead Lily. As always I’ll use the same base engine, but probably modify the rules a bit, since I like to experiment every new game I make.

C14 Dating update

Now to the best news of this week: it looks like that C14 Dating might be out very soon! I don’t want to say any date yet, but really I think maximum next month the beta should start. The final release depends on the beta as always but since it’s not a complex-gameplay game, it shouldn’t take long. Currently the coder is finishing/testing the various minigames like the one below:

Queen Of Thieves update

Progress on Queen Of Thieves have been made this week as well: all the otome CG images are done, and I almost finished coding the last part of the robbery mini game. While there’s still some writing left (and probably some more art/adjustment needed), even this game looks like could be ready for this Summer ๐Ÿ™‚

The Queen Of Thieves – Tomas Jingoli

tomasjingoliThis week is the turn of another secondary character, one of the “bad guys” (very very bad!), General Tomas Jingoli (I foresee an interesting boss fight with him in the game).

General Tomas Jingoli, the โ€˜Kin Killerโ€™

Born the bastard son of one of the noble families of Ahkra, Tomas was cast out as an embarrassment along with his servant mother. He was raised a peasant well aware of his noble origins and how they had spurned him. It made him angry and that rage simmered within him for all of his young life. Leaving home as an adult, he joined a mercenary company passing through the city and left to fight across the world in more battles than he could count.

He returned many years later to find his fatherโ€™s family out of favour with the latest ruler of the country and he saw an opportunity. Entering the castle, he pledged allegiance to Raul and promised that he would cleanse his family of all disloyal members. He failed to mention that he was a bastard son and not an actual son of the Jingoli family, but such facts he deemed unnecessary to what he planned to do.

Entering the estate of his father, Tomas roved through the manor and slew everyone he came across. None could stand against and in the end every member of the household, servant and noble, laid dead at his feet. His display impressed Raul who immediately appointed him as the general of his armies and ordered him to pursue the Queen of Thieves that the Jingoli family had previously failed to stop during her latest robbery.

Tomas is utterly consumed with the hatred and rage that fed him his whole life. Even with the object of his hatred dead, he cannot let go of the anger inside him. Every slight, real and imagined, has to be answered with lethal force and it has led to the point that even his most trusted men live in utter terror of him. Despite that, no one would dare cross him and so, for now, all of Raulโ€™s soldiers are completely obedient to Tomas Jingoli, the Kin Killer.

PSCD update

For those who don’t read the forums or follow me on twitter, I made more updates on PSCD. You can already play several missions/scenes beside the free demo now ๐Ÿ™‚

As always the best way to download the demo is from my forums: http://winterwolves.net/viewtopic.php?f=42&t=3745

npcmissions

Besides the main plot missions, I have also added over 16 NPC missions. They’re specific missions with one of the various characters present in the game (including Remi/Alicia), as you can see from the screenshot above.

You’ll get 3 random NPC missions each time, so not all at once like in the image (it was a test I did during development). They’re mostly for the gameplay-fans, though there are also some small scenes in each of them (but really small, not like the team talk ones).

So far everything seems on schedule, the theme song is done (and it’s beautiful, can’t wait to show it to the public) and the video trailer is already being made. Barring unforeseen circumstances, the January 2016 release of the final game seems definitely possible ๐Ÿ™‚

After the base game is out, I’ll probably take a break and publish one of the dating sim (very likely C14 Dating!) and then get back to work on the DLC. After that, I’ll resume working on Queen Of Thieves, and other games (depending on their advancement status).

Speaking of C14 Dating… have you seen how beautiful the new CGs are?? no? here’s a sneak preview:

Queen Of Thieves โ€“ Fredrick

fredrick
And now time for another male interest introduction: Fredrick! Read what the writer has to say about him below:

Fredrick Holtzer

Fredrick has been a lifelong resident of Ahkra. He was born in the town and expects to die there. His family has been living in the area for generations and he has some pride in that. Even when things might be better elsewhere, he has rather stubbornly refused to move on.

He currently runs a rather successful shop selling all kinds of goods. The middle classes and even some nobles frequently patronize his establishment leaving him relatively well-off compared to many others under the rule of Lord Raul. His success has made him rather unpopular with his fellow merchants but he cares little for that. So long as those that count him as friends like him then he cares little for those he is not friends with. He does not make real friends easily, however, so there are few that have a high opinion of him in Ahkra.

Most consider Fredrick a troublemaker who has no respect for the rules of business. He scoffs at such attitudes, attributing them to jealous rivals who struggle to grow even as he becomes more successful with every passing year. That is not to say he believes himself superior. He just believes in taking risks and reaping the rewards. Sometimes those risks do not work out but he does not let that destroy him like so many others. No matter how badly he is put down, Fredrick will get back up.

More progress on the robbery missions

Another week has passed, and made progress both on PSCD and the robbery missions of PSCD. The screen below is the main screen you’ll see when doing your night raids with the three sisters:

robberymaster
I am quite satisfied by the results, since there are several mechanics and they seem to work well together. Beside running the shop normally during day and earning a few money, during night you can:

  • pickpocket people: merchants is the safer district, but if you try to pickpocket nobles or even military people… you could get in trouble. Failing at pick pocketing will start battles, some with specific goals (stop the noble from calling for help for example)
  • explore: you will spend time to find new targets to rob. But even after you discover one, you won’t know much about it
  • and that’s where gather info comes useful: you can spend time eavesdropping or a little money to bribe people to gain more info about the chosen target: how big the house is, how many floors, how much money/gems, level of the encounters, etc
  • finally, choosing start robbery will start the robbery mission itself ๐Ÿ™‚

I like the freedom you have, since you can choose to start a mission even without getting information, but maybe the target won’t have much money, or the enemies inside will be tougher than expected, and so on.

Regarding PSCD, I made a video of the current status of the battle screen:

Last but not least, all the romance CG ending for C14 Dating are done! It means that the game should be out soon ๐Ÿ™‚

Queen Of Thieves โ€“ Therjalla

therjalla

Therjalla is the only elf romanceable character of the game, so already for this rather unique, but I also like a lot her design, I think artist did a great job with her ๐Ÿ™‚

Therjalla Armeโ€™Fallanerien

No one really knows who Therjalla is apart from being Ahkraโ€™s new healer. The old and much maligned healer died very suddenly a couple of weeks before the sisters arrived in town, and the priests of the temple begged the traveling elf to stay on as temporary healer, until a replacement could be sent from the orderโ€™s headquarters hundreds of miles away. She agreed to do so, as despite being a scholar first, she still held to her vow as a healer, and could not let the people be without one for however many weeks it will take for a replacement to be sent.

Outside of healing, Therjalla keeps to herself at all times and talks to no one, except to collect various supplies she has brought in, to aid her research into the various herbs and plant life of the world. Several people have spotted her roaming the woods at night, collecting samples and carrying them back to the temple where she stays, but what she does with them nobody knows.

Many mistake the scholar for being cold but she is nothing of the sort. Therjalla actually cares a great deal about people, she is just not a particularly expressive person. She does not think there is anything wrong with this, and makes no effort to change her demeanour to suit others.

Queen Of Thieves update

Speaking of this game, this week started working on the last part of gameplay missing: the “robbery missions”.

robberydoneIn the image above you see the pre-robbery setup screen, where you can choose which usable items to carry with you. Yes, because differently from my previous RPGs, you have a limited amount of items you can carry with you (starting at 6 in Easy, to get as low as 3 in Nightmare difficulty). This was added to solve the problem that had in both Loren and SOTW, that is you could stock up a big amount of items, like bombs, and then kill even the most powerful enemy just using them (in SOTW there was a clever AI so it wasn’t always possible, but it was still unbalancing a bit, giving a clear advantage to Thief classes).

Now don’t think this restriction will make the game much harder or less fun: it will still be possible to win using the right item at the right moment, and since you are fully healed (both in HP and SP) after each battle, you don’t need to fear entering in battle already injured (like could happen in SOTW).

I wanted each item and decision to use one, to be more meaningful/important, and this way I think I’ve achieved my goal. Also, class restrictions have been removed, even a Mage like Joanne knows how to throw a bomb! ๐Ÿ™‚ This mainly because with only 3 playable characters, having a limit of items usage by Class would have been too much.

Work on the other games goes on as well. I’ve commissioned new GUI for a few of the games in progress, like Summer In Trigue, which you can see below. I particularly like the star-shaped menu choices and the new dialogue window ๐Ÿ™‚
